Lymphoedema
Lymphoedema is a chronic condition characterised by the accumulation of protein-rich fluid in the body's tissues. It occurs when the body's lymphatic system is damaged or obstructed, most commonly caused by cancer treatments such as surgery or radiation, but can also be due to primary (or congenital) causes.
Treatment Includes:
Precise Measurement

Precise measuring is the cornerstone of lymphatic care. Without measurement there is no way of being certain that treatment is effective. Even for those purely at risk with no actual swelling, an accurate base-line measurement is of utmost importance for future reference, should symptoms develop.
Garment Prescription

Where swelling is present, compression is a crucial part of lymphoedema management. There are various types of garment that can provide this, stocking like garments, sleeves, wraps and ribbed garments. Having a professionally fitted garment is critical, as poorly fitting garments can cause damage and actually make swelling worse.
Lymphatic Massage

Lymphatic massage is a gentle massage designed to facilitate the movement of fluid away from swollen areas. As well as helping to reduce congestion in limbs affected by lymphoedema, it is also used to assist in recovery and well being by filtering out waste products and toxins from the body more effectively.
Exercise

Movement is very beneficial for those with lymphoedema as it stimulates the "muscle pump" mechanism from within the body which helps to move fluid. It can be hard to get back into exercise after cancer treatments which is where a physiotherapist-led programme can be particularly helpful.
Skin Care Education

Retention of fluid within the body's tissues can provide a breeding ground for bacteria and weaken the skin's immune response. Therefore careful attention to the skin is really important for those with lymphatic issues. Brae Physio provides advice and education on this topic.
Lymphatic Taping

Kinesiotape can be specially applied in a "spider-leg" arrangement to help draw lymphatic fluid away from the tissues and towards the healthy lymph nodes. Patients can be taught how to carry out this technique themselves.
Lipoedema
Lipoedema is a fat storage condition that almost exclusively affects women, predominantly on their legs but occasionally can include arms too. Symptoms include a distinctive cellulitic appearance to the tissues that often includes the entire leg with the exception of the foot. Legs are often also tender and bruise easily. Lymphatic massage, compression and diet are important cornerstones of managment.
